RVers Working While They Travel
In talking to several RVers it was apparent that their quest for freedom and passion for the open road doesn’t begin at 5:00 on a Friday. It quickly became evident to me that there is a certain freedom that the RV lifestyle offers, and it stems from having the ability to control, at least in part, some of your own destiny. What a dreamy thought! Read on to learn how these RV models can afford you such luxury.
2009 Beaver Patriot Thunder (Princeton IV floorplan)
This 45’ diesel pusher (photographed above) offers the kind of luxurious comfort that will make you feel like the Chairman of the Board. Solid surface countertops and beautiful high gloss-finish cabinetry are the pinnacle of the Patriot’s amazing interior décor. In the living room, you can work or play. Spacious sofas surround a 40” LCD TV and a computer desk with a leather Euro-recliner and ottoman nestled just rear of the cockpit.
These working RVers have tailored their RVs and their lives to accommodate their careers while affording them the luxury to be able to experience the freedom of traveling the country their way. Read on to learn how they make it all happen.
John DiPietro, a professional author, speaker and marketer, travels the east coast while working out of his 2008 Itasca Navion, a 24’ Class C motor home. Also a former college professor, DiPietro is a sought-after sales coach and the author of the book You Don’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Great!
“Working out of my RV allows me to recharge my body and mind while at the same time getting my work done,” said DiPietro. “Plus I get to change my surroundings whenever I want. To me, it’s like the weight of the world is lifted off my shoulders when I know that I can get my job done and not be locked into an office environment day-in and day-out.”
He goes on to say, “When I stay in a hotel, I feel like I’m on their schedule. I have to check-in and out by a certain time. I have to park at a certain spot. I have to go find food when I’m hungry. Not to mention, I have to physically tote all of my things between the hotel and my car. With the motor home, none of these inconveniences exist. I arrive at my destination when I get there. If I want something to eat, I just turn to my left and there it is. I don’t have to stop what I’m doing and go to a food store. No going to the car to retrieve luggage or other gear. All of my belongings are with me and they’re conveniently at my disposal. Not to mention the beauty of being able to choose the ambiance for my work environment day to day.”
DiPietro concluded, “My Navion performs like a car. It has a diesel engine and I get about 17-18 MPG. One of the things I like about it is the easy-to-use septic system. In my previous coach, I pulled the lever too quickly and the pressure dislodged the hose from the body of the motor home. So for about 10 seconds I was the recipient of a spray of…well, you know. When the pressure ceased, I noticed there was a guy next to me dumping his tank. He looked over at me, winked and said, ’welcome to the club!’ Now with my Navion, every time is like a charm.”
Bob Cowgill is an independent consultant who, with his wife, travels the country while working out of their 2009 Monaco Executive. With the wireless communication technology that is available today, Cowgill was able to sell his insurance business and “upgrade” their RV lifestyle from weekender to full-timer, while still doing what he loves to do.
“We bought the Sierra floorplan of the Executive because it has a center office. There is plenty of room for my laptop and printer/scanner on the desktop, and the file drawer can accommodate all of my files. It’s great because when we pull into a campground I can sit down and get some work done right away. It seems like 95% of the places we travel to have wireless internet so I can get online and do everything I need to do without purchasing any special equipment for my coach.”
Cowgill added, “My clients don’t care where I am as long as the work gets done. Plus, working out of our RV gives my wife and me the freedom to be anywhere we want to be and still generate the income that pays for all of the toys and fun. We have owned several motor homes, but our Monaco Executive has everything we ever wanted. Truth is there is more luxury in our RV than there is in our home.”
2009 Keystone Raptor
2009 Keystone Raptor (380LEV floorplan)
For those projects you just can’t take in the house, the cargo area in this 40’ fifth wheel toy hauler provides 14-c.f. of air-conditioned work space with rugged Advantek™ flooring. And if you like to listen while you work, there is also a 26” LCD TV. When your work day is done, step inside and enjoy the built-in fireplace while relaxing on the hide-a-bed sofa, or you can take in your favorite show on the 32” LCD TV. Either way, it’s business and pleasure – all in one.
2009 Damon Outlaw
2009 Damon Outlaw (3808 floorplan)
If you’re an active RVer, this 39’ motor home toy hauler features one of the most space-efficient floorplans available. In its loft bedroom above the cargo area, a spacious queen-size bed provides a comfortable resting place. In addition, a 68” hide-a-bed sofa and 26” LCD TV make for a modern, yet cozy living room atmosphere. In the rear, an 8’x12’ cargo area features Tread Plate non-slip, oil resistant flooring which makes for easy upkeep.
Jessica Patterson is a professional motorcycle racer who travels the country more than 45 weeks a year in her 2008 Damon Outlaw. In her 8-year career, she has been named the Women’s Motocross Association’s National Champion five times, earning her the designation of “winningest rider” in WMA history. Having won a total of more than 35 national championship races, her promoters and fans affectionately refer to her as “the best female rider on the planet.”
“The Outlaw is just perfect for what we do. The garage has plenty of room for the bikes and its aluminum cabinets keep all of our motor oils and lubricants tucked away. The cabinets also hold all of my gear like knee braces, and we added racks on the walls to hold the helmets and chest protectors. We also added a toolbox and we use the underneath bays to store the pressure washers that we use to wash the bikes, said Patterson.
She continued, “With our coach, the front [storage] bays hold everyday RV stuff like grills and the back [rear storage] bays hold extra motors and things that we need for the job. Even with all of that, we still have extra space. The loft bedroom was a real selling point for us. In our old RV, it felt like we were sleeping in our living room, but the loft is great because it allows for more room to stretch out and relax between races. The Outlaw also has plenty of power. We tow a truck, and you barely know it’s back there.”
“When racing is your life, your life is traveling state-to-state from one adventure to the next. But, when we’re in our RV, we’re always home.”
Jim Dent is a professional golfer whose preferred method of travel and lodging is his 2004 Country Coach Magna. Known for being one of the longest hitters in the history of the PGA Tour, Dent has continued to find success on the Champions Tour (formerly the Senior PGA Tour) where he has won 12 tournaments since 1989.
“I travel all over the country to play golf and my RV is my favorite hotel. For years I stayed in hotels, but the RV is just better for me because I don’t have to worry about reservations and check-out times. I can just come and go as I please. The best thing is that I never have to pack and unpack. Our coach is always ready to go. The funny thing is I started to play better once I got an RV. There is something [to be said] about the fun you have. It makes you feel like you did when you were young and just getting started,” said Dent.
2009 Winnebago Tour
2009 Winnebago Tour (40WD floorplan)
Say good bye to the Monday morning blues. With three slideouts and numerous amenities, the 40’ Tour offers a level of comfort that surpasses any shop. Because of Winnebago Industries’ exclusive SmartSpace® design philosophy, both maximum livability and workability are achieved. Cargo space consists of a 205-c.f. exterior storage area while the inside provides plenty of cabinets and creative storage spaces, like the U-shaped dinette that features pull-out storage drawers underneath.
2009 Holiday Rambler Alumascape
2009 Holiday Rambler Alumascape (34BHT floorplan)
This 2 bedroom/2 bath fifth wheel trailer can accommodate multiple careers. Aside from its two enclosed bedrooms this 36’ fiver is loaded with beautiful Newport Cherry wood storage cabinets and boasts efficiencies such as in-floor ducted heating and 5-layer sidewall construction with 1½ block foam insulation as well as an enclosed and heated underbelly. Other amenities include a fabric glider recliner, 8-c.f refrigerator and hide-a-bed sofa.
Lincoln Dexter, a former U.S. Navy Aviator, operates his business of inspecting and repairing historic aircraft out of his 2005 Country Coach Inspire. When asked, he will tell you that he travels the country in what he refers to his favorite non-winged vehicle.
“We’ve got about 43,000 miles on our coach,” said Dexter. “We run around the country taking care of and restoring old military airplanes, especially North American T-28 Trojans. That’s our specialty. I also do a lot of work at big air shows, and our RV is like our headquarters. It makes for a pretty comfortable briefing room when we gather for pre-flight briefings before the show. If I can’t fly my own plane, my RV is a nice travel alternative.”
He went on to say, “We pull a big stacker trailer behind our coach. That’s where I keep all of my tools, airplane jacks and other parts and supplies I need for the job. Overall our Inspire is the perfect size for us!”
Jerry Crebbs uses his 2003 Monaco Dynasty to travel the country while performing mobile auto and RV service to fellow travelers. A lifelong student of automotive engineering, Crebbs so loves repairing vehicles that he hardly considers it work.
“My wife likes the inside of our coach to stay real nice so I keep most of my tools in the underneath storage bays. The sliding tray in this storage area makes it really easy for me to access my tools and because it offers plenty of storage. I can carry everything I need with me—hand tools, testers, air compressors — you name it,” said Crebbs.
He added, “I love the RV lifestyle, because it allows me to keep moving. I have developed a large base of friends/customers in my travels. When they see me coming, they all know that I can help them out with anything that needs fixing. A lot of them like to learn, too. They want to be able to fix things themselves. I enjoy teaching them; it really forms a friendship that lasts a long time.”
